The American Academy of Family Physicians is partnering with consumer products companies to develop robust programs and educational materials for consumers and medical professionals about making better choices with regard to nutrition, physical activity, emotional well-being, and other ways to achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
AAFP recognizes that consumer products companies can have significant influence over consumer health. That’s why the AAFP created its Consumer Alliance program, a strategy whereby the AAFP aims to partner with companies who demonstrate good corporate stewardship and a strategic focus on consumer health.
Non-dues revenue funding, such as that provided by Consumer Alliance partners, supplements member dues, making it possible for the Academy to provide critical member services. Without this important funding source, the AAFP’s focus on member advocacy, high quality education, practice resources, and health of the public programs would be seriously jeopardized.
AAFP supports and follows the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) Code for Interaction with Companies. This voluntary code is designed to ensure that societies’ interactions with companies are independent and transparent, and advance medical care for the benefit of patients and populations. This document, an annual report to the AAFP’s Congress of Delegates, provides additional information about the AAFP’s sources of non-dues revenue.
FamilyDoctor.org, the AAFP’s award-winning consumer health and wellness resource, is the fundamental core of the AAFP Consumer Alliance. Through partnerships in the Consumer Alliance, AAFP will continue to expand educational content that focuses on prevention and wellness to help consumers make informed decisions about nutrition, physical activity, emotional health and prevention of disease.
